If you want to have an amazing snow day either skiing or boarding on a mountain with hardly any people, Rusutsu in Hokkaido, Japan is the place, with plenty of untracked powder, that you can access directly off the lifts. There are also 3 mountains to choose from being Mt. Isola, which is the largest, Mt. East and over by the base of the resort and the theme park is the smaller Mt. West, which has a terrain park, half pipe and some incredible back country.
After living in Niseko Japan for the better part of 2 and a half months I knew the mountain there like the back of my hand. However, I had also wanted to check out a few other mountains and one day, Max, the owner of the hostel (where I was staying) threw the idea out there to head over to Rusutsu and have a day on the slopes.
The next day, a group of us all jumped out of bed excitedly, scoffed down our breakfast and loaded the car up. Stopping to stock up for supplies (lunch) we journeyed over to Rusutsu for a snow day, which is about a 45 minute drive from Niseko. Or, just 90 minutes from Chitose, the closest airport to Niseko and Rustus.
Rusutsu is a resort where you can enjoy every season, its not just open for the winter and snow season. During the summer you can be entertained at the amusement park, play golf or get up to a whole range of activates that are provided. They have hot springs, restaurants and various places to stay.
Although during the winter you can get up to tubing, sledding or snowmobiling we stuck to what we knew best, skiing and boarding. Here is a clip of us having some wintertime fun.
