Why everyone hates Aussie travellers
It’s sad but true, we Aussies are creating a bad rep for ourselves globally. Our rep is becoming more and more renowned as the wild, we don’t care much about anything lets do what we want and party hard type attitude. I am not pointing fingers here (well maybe a little), but it’s mainly the younger Aussies for the plain and simple fact that we really don’t realise how privileged we are to travel. Which means we don’t respect the places we travel.
For any of you who have been to Kuta, Bali in Indonesia will understand what I am talking about. But that is not at all the sole place where we have a bad reputation, and the more places I travel the more I see this.
This bad rep, it’s not like we want it. It’s just that we don’t even think about the repercussions of our stupidity. I mean if you are on a holiday or a trip you are going to maximize your fun in any way you can right, which is acceptable.
However, us Aussies are wild and we do LOVE to party. We party so hard that often we don’t even realize the affect we have on some people, places and the cultures that we visit. Obviously the younger you are the the more pronned you are to care a little less. A typical obnoxious Aussie tourist stereotype will get drunk, party and not let anything or anyone get in the way of their fun, and its not like we are discreet about it either.
I for one can’t say I am no angel. I once participated in drunken shenanigans, hell I was probably an instigator some of those times. Which I too probably never even thought about what I was doing and how it could affect the locals for the sheer fact I was a little ignorant. However, I quite quickly smartened up and was able to travel much more. This is when I began to look from the outside of what was going on and understand what I and a lot of others were doing.
You don’t need to get pissed out of your brain to enjoy a place, most of the places around the world are exceptional enough without drinking. But a lot of Aussies are too ignorant to even care, and the more this happens the more people there are from all around the world that see this sort of behaviour. Which clarifies (to them) that Aussies are just wild, obnoxious idiots.
With all this rude behaviour, it can be typically devastating as such terrible behaviour can radiate from one Aussie tourist to the next. Causing a great destination to become destroyed by a high influx of obnoxious Aussies.
As I said before too. This happens all over the globe, not just Bali, Thailand and the ski hills of Canada. It’s totally global, we are earning a reputation that is not quite acceptable in a lot of places.
For instance I was in Germany trying to get into a campsite to which we weren’t aloud, for the fact that I was with 3 other mates and our van was our home. They had already had such bad experiences from other Aussies living out of vans at their campgrounds that they banned us, yep banned!
Obviously I am not against a great time and partying, however there is a time and a place for everything and walking the streets drunk, partying, spewing up and pissing in public is not acceptable in our own country, so why should it be anywhere else in the world?
So if you are an Aussie going on a trip, by all means don’t totally hold back from your fun nights. But be prudent with your behavior as soon enough we will be excluded from a lot more places. It is not fair to gain a reputation like this that will be more universally known for what type of people we are when we get on the piss (drink).
Have you seen such behavior like this around the world too? We would love to know your thoughts on this matter so please feel free to share in the comment box below.
Aussies have always been wankers, but not to the degree that they are now. 2 decades of no recession has turned you into the most obnoxious people in the world.
Wow Seppo that is a little harsh, I hope you don’t think that of every Australian. Yes there are some rude ones around just like you can find in any country but that would be such a shame if you have only had encounters with the bad bunch
The same could be said of Americans. Many people find us obnoxious as well. And others say the French are rude, the Russians cold…and so on. That’s the thing about travel. It breaks down the prejudices and you realize that some people are just douche bags no matter their nationality!
Yea that is true Jen, there are always the bad bunch no matter where we are from. The sad thing is that these people leave such a sour taste in peoples mouths that the locals perceive majority of those nationals to be the same. Such a shame, but you are so right. Cheers
I found issues with finding places to stay in Greece due to the same issue. Because we had people with us that were 18 – 25 they wanted us to pay a bond because of past experiences.
I honestly don’t think it’s just Australian’s but other countries too.
I think it’s a generation thing and the type of drinking culture we have now been brought up with. Until that changes the way people act obviously won’t.
What, that sucks, sorry to hear Jess. Yea your right, a lot of people in that age range even no Aussies are ruining it for everyone in some circumstances
I totally agree – i was in Bali last year with my mother and we were both actually horrified and disliked being in the be achy kuta, legion area because of all the really big, drunk, and loud groups of Australian guys – that would approach us – drunk and slurring – and say something kind of rude.
(I am an Australian travel blogger too – but i don’t drink – and retired from clubbing –> when i travel i go in search of vegan food, yoga, and nice quiet places).
Great post Jaryd
Thanks Jasmine, I actually recently stopped drinking too, although the odd one doesn’t hurt but only on a very rare occasion. It’s better to travel that way and have more time. I feel better and actually see more places and meet more people than ever. It’s a shame our culture is such a binge drinking culture, but hey, each to their own right.
That’s something you have in common with the Brits…. I’ve heard terrible things about how rude and obnoxious Aussies can be through other Aussies who actually travel long term and enjoy exploring other cultures instead of getting pissed 24 hours. I personally, only met amazing Aussies, but that’s because I avoid party places.
There is a huge difference between tourists and travelers, no doubt about it.
Yea i am one of those long term travellers. One who has done the whole get wasted and miss out on the real reason I am visiting those places.
I’m inclined to disagree with everyone hating Aussies…however I have not been to Kuta. I have yet to meet an Aussie dude I didn’t like. However, EVERY Aussie girl I’ve met that’s under the age of 25 has been an obnoxious, rude, bitch! As for the nationality that is most despised…Israelis take top dis-honor by far!
Haha yea, a lot of young Aussie girls are quite superstitious, don’t visit the Gold Coast when you come to Australia. It’s so bad no one will even to talk to you!
Yeah, totally agree with everything. I hate us, and have been us, plenty of damn times. The older I get the more I notice it, I was in Buenos Aires in January at the Brazilian consulate and this guy in a Hawthorn jersey was obnoxious enough to be refused a visa. Not on any legal terms but he was such an arsehole to the girl a the counter that she picked part his application and told him to come back in a week, wrecked his travel plans. He turned around to me confused and I just shrugged and said, ‘well, there you go.’
I’m in Bogota right now and some mates are pulling in this afternoon, it’s going to be a big night.
Yea Jono, you know how it is. You can still have fun anywhere in the world with anyone and still be respectable. Enjoy Bogota mate, wish I was there.
THANK YOU for this article! I’m from the United States and have been traveling internationally (solo) for about 5 years now. I’ve met so many cool interesting people from around the world – that’s what travel is all about for me
Occasionally, trouble finds me… but not where you would almost expect it! I had no trouble with the locals in Cairo (awesome people) and not with the Kyrg people in Kyrgyzstan (amazing county)… honestly I have NEVER had problems with the locals. It’s always with other travelers… specifically Aussie guys. They seem to always be LOOKING for trouble. Ad what is it with Aussie guys who ask me where I am from and when I say “The United States” they say: “I don’t know what you’re talking about…” or “I have no idea what that is!” ?? Only after I repeat the full country name do they change their tune: “You don’t know the United States? The United States of America?” “Oh” they say in defiance. “You are from AMERICA!”.
Do Aussie guys not not want to acknowledge that the USA is a collection of States who all have their own laws…. This has happened on at least 3 separate occasions! It’s like they learn this apparent put-down somewhere specific!? Why do Australian guys hate people from the USA?
Hey Scott, I am unsure but that is quite rude if you ask me. Not worth your time worrying about that is for sure!
